How to Wrap Fresh Flowers Sustainably in New Zealand

Wrapping flowers doesn’t need to involve cellophane or synthetic ribbon. At Black Cat Flower Garden in Glenroy, we wrap every bunch using materials that are fully compostable, beautiful, and easy to use — proving that sustainable floristry is just as thoughtful as it is practical.

Here’s how to wrap fresh flowers the NZ way, without plastic waste:

🌸 What You’ll Need:

  • Plain kraft paper or compostable tissue

  • Natural jute string or paper ribbon

  • A handwritten tag or card (recycled card is perfect)

  • A reused glass jar or brown paper cone for structure

Start by laying your paper on a flat surface and bunching your flowers in the centre. Tie the stems loosely with jute twine. Fold the paper into a cone, then secure it with ribbon and tuck in your label. Not only is the result charming, it breaks down naturally once your flowers have had their time in the vase.

Cathy prepares wrapping sets seasonally, including all of the above. These are ideal for florists, home gardeners, or anyone who wants to gift with a little more care.
